Marco Rubio GOP Response to State of the Union Speech 2013

Florida Senator Marco Rubio gave the GOP response to the 2013 State of the Union address last night.
“And the idea that more taxes and more government spending is the best way to help hardworking middle class taxpayers – that’s an old idea that’s failed every time it’s been tried.
More government isn’t going to help you get ahead. It’s going to hold you back.
More government isn’t going to create more opportunities. It’s going to limit them.
And more government isn’t going to inspire new ideas, new businesses and new private sector jobs. It’s going to create uncertainty.
Because more government breeds complicated rules and laws that a small business can’t afford to follow.
Because more government raises taxes on employers who then pass the costs on to their employees through fewer hours, lower pay and even layoffs.”

Dr. Benjamin Carson’s Speech at the National Prayer Breakfast with President Obama

Famed Baltimore neurosurgeon Dr. Benjamin Carson addressed the National Prayer Breakfast on Thursday morning on healthcare. Dr. Carson often criticized Obamacare and government intrusion in healthcare while President Obama sat in the audience. Dr. Carson encouraged a program where newborn babies are given health savings account as an alternative to Obamacare.

DR. CARSON: What we need to do is come up with something simple. And when I pick up my Bible, you know what I see? I see the fairest individual in the universe, God, and he’s given us a system. It’s called a tithe.

We don’t necessarily have to do 10% but it’s the principle. He didn’t say if your crops fail, don’t give me any tithe or if you have a bumper crop, give me triple tithe. So there must be something inherently fair about proportionality. You make $10 billion, you put in a billion. You make $10 you put in one. Of course you’ve got to get rid of the loopholes. Some people say, ‘Well that’s not fair because it doesn’t hurt the guy who made $10 billion as much as the guy who made 10.’ Where does it say you’ve got to hurt the guy? He just put a billion dollars in the pot. We don’t need to hurt him. It’s that kind of thinking that has resulted in 602 banks in the Cayman Islands. That money needs to be back here building our infrastructure and creating jobs.

DR. CARSON: Here’s my solution: When a person is born, give him a birth certificate, an electronic medical record, and a health savings account to which money can be contributed — pretax — from the time you’re born ’til the time you die. When you die, you can pass it on to your family members, so that when you’re 85 years old and you got six diseases, you’re not trying to spend up everything. You’re happy to pass it on and there’s nobody talking about death panels.

Number one. And also, for the people who were indigent who don’t have any money we can make contributions to their HSA each month because we already have this huge pot of money. Instead of sending it to some bureaucracy, let’s put it in their HSAs. Now they have some control over their own health care.

President Obama’s Weekly Address 1/19/2013 It Is Time To Act On Gun Violence

President Obama reiterates his commitment to do everything in his power to implement a series of commonsense measures that would reduce gun violence in America. The President started off that effort with 23 concrete actions his Administration is taking immediately under its existing legal authority. But to have a lasting impact, Congress must join the administration by passing commonsense laws like requiring a universal background check for anyone trying to buy a gun, and restoring a ban on military-style assault weapons and a 10-round limit for magazines. If they do that, we can respect the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens while helping to keep the irresponsible few from causing massive harm.

Harry Reid Said Hurricane Katrina Was Nothing Compared to Hurricane Sandy

Senate Leader Harry Reid told the Senate yesterday that he felt category 5 hurricane Katrina was nothing compared to the recent “super storm” Sandy which was a category 1 storm when it slammed into the east coast. “When we had that devastating Katrina, we were there within days, taking care of Mississippi, Alabama, and especially Louisiana,” said Reid. “Within days. We are now past two months with the people of New York. And the people of New Orleans, in that area, they were hurt, but nothing in comparison to what’s happened to the people in New England.” Is he trying to say that the Bush administration got right to work, whereas the Obama administration has done nothing but talk so far? Almost 1,500 people died from Hurricane Katrina, and about 110 died from Hurricane Sandy. Also Hurricane Katrina was on TV daily for about 3 months with reporters telling us how bad a job the government did in their response, while Hurricane Sandy only gets coverage when there is a big concert or vote in Congress.

On Friday the White House and Congressional leaders agreed that the Senate must now act to avoid going over the fiscal cliff and that this will require a bipartisan approach. In the Weekly Republican Address, U.S. Senator Roy Blunt (R-MO), Vice Chairman of the Republican Conference, highlights that effort and notes that lawmakers have an opportunity to kick off the New Year by working together to solve some of the big challenges facing our country today.
