The Buffett Tax Is A Distraction, Not A Solution

The GOP have put together this chart that shows the Buffett Tax would be little more than a “drop in the bucket.” President Obama explained the Buffett Tax is a “very simple principle that everybody should understand: Warren Buffett’s secretary shouldn’t pay a lower [sic] tax rate than Warren Buffett. A teacher making $50,000 a year, or a firefighter making $50,000 a year or $60,000, shouldn’t be paying a higher tax rate than somebody making $50 million a year. And that basic principle of fairness, if applied to our tax code, could raise enough money that not only do we pay for our jobs bill, but we also stabilize our debt and deficits for the next decade. And as I said when I made the announcement, this is not politics; this is math.” The GOP have responded saying, “”That figure would be a drop in the bucket of the more than $7 trillion in federal budget deficits projected during that period. It is minuscule compared with the many hundreds of billions of dollars it would cost to repeal the alternative minimum tax, which Obama’s budget last month said he would replace with the Buffett-rule tax.” You can go here to see more of a GOP examination of the Buffett Tax.

Herman Cain was on Fox news this morning and said he would support Mitt Romney. “The mission is to get control of the Senate, maintain control of the House, and defeat Barack Obama. That means get behind the nominee, so yes, I’m ready to get behind the nominee,” Cain said. “I have always said I will support whoever the nominee is, and it looks like Mitt Romney is going to be that nominee and we do need to get behind him,” Cain added. He said the President is “pandering to the people that feel they are not getting a fair shake of the economy.” He feels the “Buffett Rule” is purely political. “Mitt Romney is a wealthy man. Get over it.”

Classic Presidential Campaign Ad Lyndon Johnson 1964 “Daisy” Ad

This is the first in a series of classic ads from Fantasy Politics USA. This is from the 1964 presidential campaign with Lyndon Johnson campaigning against Barry Goldwater. This ad only aired once and is known as one of the most controversial campaign ads ever produced. It was also considered an important factor in Johnson’s landslide win over Goldwater. Daisy” aired only once, during a September 7, 1964 telecast of ‘David and Bathsheba’ on The NBC Monday Movie. Johnson’s campaign was widely criticized for using the prospect of nuclear war, as well as for the implication that Goldwater would start one, to frighten voters. The ad was immediately pulled, but the point was made, appearing on the nightly news and on conversation programs in its entirety. Jack Valenti, who served as a special assistant to Johnson, later suggested that pulling the ad was a calculated move, arguing that “it showed a certain gallantry on the part of the Johnson campaign to withdraw the commercial.” “These are the stakes! President Obama has been campaigning against big oil, and wants to take away all their tax breaks or “subsidies” as he calls them. According to the ad, “High gas prices lead to record profits for big oil and now they’re pumping millions into ads falsely attacking the president. Why? Because Obama wants to take away their $4 billion dollar tax breaks.”
