Steve Colbert takes his campaign to South Carolina where the mayor of Columbia gave him a key to the city, and called him a “favorite son.” Colbert told a crowd at the University of South Carolina that, “I love South Carolina almost as much as South Carolina loves me.” Colbert is trying to get on the both the Democratic and Republican ballots for South Carolina. Colbert said, “I am here not only to accept the honor you have given me but to prove to everyone that this campaign is real. To put an end to the vicious rumors that this is not a serious candidacy.” He talked about the great peaches that are grown in South Carolina, and said, “Over the past 18 hours, this campaign has gone everywhere in this state, from Charleston to Columbia.” He even has a campaign phrase just for his South Carolina campaign. “In the 19th century, South Carolina was the first to secede,” he said. “In the 21st we will the first to succeed. First to secede. First to succeed. I own the copyright on that phrase, if you use it you must pay me a royalty.” The mayor of Columbia even went so far as to call October 28th “Stephen Colbert Day.” Colbert has also endorsed another South Carolinian for President, John Edwards. The Edwards camp says until Colbert wins the primary he can’t really be called the “favorite son.” They then complained about Colbert’s ties to the snack food industry because Colbert claims Doritos will sponsor his campaign. Edwards spokesperson Teresa Wells said, “What is more troubling than his quest for a status his own mother won’t grant him (favorite son) are his ties to the salty food industry. As the candidate of Doritos, his hands are stained by corporate corruption and nacho cheese. John Edwards has never taken a dime from taco chip lobbyists and America deserves a President who isn’t in the pocket of the snack food special interests.” When he goes in Vermont he can get sponsored by Ben and Jerry’s since his ice cream is such a big seller.

I hope that Stephen will do well in his campaign, I only wish he was going to be on the ballot for my state, California, so I can give him my vote and possibly get a chance to see him in person. I know that many have reasons to doubt whether Stephen is serious about the presidency because he cannot get the votes he will need to win from just one state, but I believe his attempt is very sincere and that he is curious about how he will do if in the future he were to run for president through-out the country. We can expect great things to come from him, and I wish him good luck and God bless.
