After insulting his constituents by saying “that western Pennsylvania is a racist area,” and later referring to them as “rednecks,” Rep. John Murtha is now facing a serious challenge from a republican for his seat. Retired Army Lt. Col. William Russell has pulled within 4 points of Murtha in the latest Susquehanna Poll with a 3.9 margin of error. Pennsylvania is up for grabs in the presidential race, and moves like this from Murtha can only help John McCain”s efforts in the state. Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback said comments like this “really riles people up and they are citing that everywhere and they are upset about it.” Brownback continued, “The politicians say, ‘This is what I think about you folks here,’ and they don’t like it and they are fired up about it, and they’re getting involved.”

In an editorial in the Kansas City Star Lewis Diuguid claims the McCain camp is using code words for blacks. According to Diugiud, “the ‘socialist’ label that Sen. John McCain and his GOP presidential running mate Sarah Palin are trying to attach to Sen. Barack Obama actually has long and very ugly historical roots.” He claims that since J. Edger Hoover called Martin Luther King Jr., and W.E.B. Du Bois socialist it must have been a code word for blacks. Diuguid says, “McCain and Palin have simply reached back in history to use an old code word for black. It set whites apart from those deemed unAmerican and those who could not be trusted during the communism scare.” This is the most ridicules charge I have heard this campaign. Does the McCain camp really need a code word to tell people that Obama is black, or at least half black? Obama reminds us all the time. This is just an example of race baiting which seems to be going on a lot these days. It just feeds on white guilt, which has no bases in reality. I would suggest that Lewis Diuguid is code for racist moron.

John McCain said he did OK last night, but the winner of last nights debate was Joe the plumber. “He won and small businesses won across America. They won because the American people are not going to let Senator Obama raise their taxes in a tough economy. They are not going to let them do it, my friends,” McCain old a crowd in Philadelphia. “Small businesses provide 16 million jobs in America and Americans know that raising taxes on small business will kill those jobs at a time when we need to be creating more jobs.” McCain also questioned Obama about telling Joe the plumber he wanted to spread the wealth around. McCain said, “Now what does that mean? He wants government to take Joe’s money and give it to somebody else-his hard earned dollars. We are not gonna stand for that. America didn’t become the greatest nation on earth by spreading the wealth. We became the greatest nation on earth by creating new wealth.” “We cannot spend the next four years as we have spent much of the last eight: waiting for our luck to change. As I mentioned last night to Senator to Obama. I’m not George Bush and if he wanted to run against George Bush he should have run four years ago,” McCain said repeating the line he used last night. Joe Biden was on the Today Show casting doubt that Joe the plumber even existed. You notice John continues to cling to the notion of this guy Joe the plumber,” Biden said. “I don’t have any Joe the plumbers in my neighborhood that make $250,000 a year that are worried.” Biden went on to say, “Joe the plumbers in my neighborhood, the Joe the cops in my neighborhood, the Joe the grocery store owners in my neighborhood — they make, like 98 percent of the small businesses, less than $250,000 a year, and they’re going to do very well under us, and they’re going to be in real tough shape under John McCain.”
