Hillary Clinton told a group at a house party that she is the best Democrat out there to deal with the terrorist, but if an attack happens before the election it will help the Republicans. “It’s a horrible prospect to ask yourself ‘What if? What if?’ But if certain things happen between now and the election, particularly with respect to terrorism, that will automatically give the Republicans an advantage again, no matter how badly they have mishandled it, no matter how much more dangerous they have made the world.†Then Clinton added, “So I think I’m the best of the Democrats to deal with that.†She bases this strength on the fact that she has beaten back the GOP attack machine for years. I know that the GOP is ruthless when dealing with a Clinton, but do they really compare to terrorist? Chris Dodd called Clinton’s comments of a possible terrorist attack tasteless. “Frankly, I find it tasteless to discuss political implications when talking about a potential terrorist attack on the United States,†Dodd said in response to Clinton’s comment. If Clinton is doing a good job of explaining why she would be the best candidate if such an attack occurs, then the Republicans shouldn’t have an advantage should one occur. Is she trying to say the Democrats would fall apart if an attack occurred? Doesn’t she have faith in her own message?

John Edwards has a new stump speech saying the old Washington establishment is corrupt and rigged. He didn’t mention Hillary Clinton by name but implied she is part of this old corrupt establishment. “Small thinking and outdated answers aren’t the only problems with a vision for the future that is rooted in nostalgia,” Edwards said. “The trouble with nostalgia is that you tend to remember what you liked and forget what you didn’t. It’s not just that the answers of the past aren’t up to the job today; it’s that the system that produced them was corrupt — and still is.” “Real change starts with being honest, and I want to say something again: The system in Washington is rigged, and I’ll say it again, it’s rigged and it’s rigged by greedy powers,” Edwards said to a crowd at Dartmouth College. “It’s rigged by the system to favor the establishment.” “The American people deserve to know that their presidency is not for sale. The Lincoln Bedroom is not for rent,” Edwards said, which is clearly a reference to the Clinton era. He said anyone tied to the past will not be the answer for the future. “Those wed to the policies of the ’70s, ’80s or the ’90s are wedded to the past, ideas and policies that are tired, shopworn and obsolete. We will find no answers there.” This is another reference to Clinton, since Bill was in charge through most of the 90’s. Edwards also warned the crowd to not, “replace one group of corporate Republicans with a group of corporate Democrats, just swapping the Washington insiders of one party for the Washington insiders of the other.” Edwards not only did a number on Hillary, who is without a doubt a part of the old establishment, he also saved some attack for newcomer Barack Obama. Obama has been talking about it is time for a change. So Edwards said, “How many times have voters in New Hampshire heard politicians come rolling through here saying that they want change? That’s great. What do they really want to do as the president of the United States?” “I don’t think just the word ‘change’ means much to people,” Edwards said in an interview. “I mean, what is the policy of the word? In my case, it’s been a very aggressive set of very substantive ideas … because otherwise the change rhetoric all sounds the same.” Edwards has remained third in most polls, and this seems to be his newest strategy. He is going to take on the the two front runners at the same time.

I get it, all of it, and I can tell you this. It doesn’t matter how united our brotherhood of grass roots volunteers is, Ron Paul will fuck over all those people. He doesn’t believe in personal rights at all, only in that we can do anything we want as long as we have the power to back it up. I think all those things you’re talking about are great, but Ron Paul is not the guy who will help any of it. The first thing he will do is work to repeal Roe vs Wade and make abortion illegal. Listen to his own words at the straw poll. (thank you thank you thank you):
Freedom, prosperity and peace.
Freedom: no right for a woman to choose.
Prosperity: National business will be strong, people will weak. Military spending. Guns would have stopped 9/11??!!! What??!! Self reliance (pull yourself up by your bootstraps), keep the fruits of your labor? That means less regulation and tax liability for businesses and CEOs.
Peace: I’m for it.
Strict interpretation of the constitution always sounds good, but that is ridiculous. People that blithely throw out that argument have no idea what they’re getting themselves into. We’ve been writing, interpreting and enforcing laws that define the Constitution for 200 years. Today we face challenges that there was absolutely no way the founders of our country could have forseen. That’s why they wrote it specifically to be read in conjunction with the times. Jefferson called for it to rewritten every 10 years!
When R Paul says a return to the old ways, he means getting rid of public programs, loans, business controls, labor laws, etc. If we really go back to the Constitution, we are fucked. The founders NEVER intended this but assholes like Ron Paul use it as a nationalistic calling for the citizens. So OK, lets go back to the original interpretation. I’m a white American lower-upper class male. I’ll be fine.
If you really want to know what it means to go back to what the Constitution originally said, I think you need to do some research and see what that means and how those words have been used. Look specifically at how Scalia has interpreted law using the exact same argument to say there can be segregation, minorities can be treated differently, no health care rights, no right to public school, no workers rights.
FACT: The Constitution was written by rich white landowners to be used as a facilitator of international trade. It was used to create one power for other countries to conduct trade deals with. Today people think it only consists of the Bill of Rights. It was written to give us financial power and the ability to kick the British out of our country (something the individual states couldn’t do after The Revolutionary War). It was a document showing where power lies, but never said much at all about human rights or governments responsibilities apart from having a strong military.
I AM angry about this guy because he’s dangerous. He appeals to people because he sounds like he’s saying ra ra America, but he’s only going to help the rich.
As far as grass roots and all that: I am grass roots. I am talking about this and am by definition part of a grass roots movement by doing so. I write my Senators and Congressmen on a regular basis. I am involved.
As far as power to the people and brotherhood: Hell yeah!!!! But this isn’t what he’s saying. He calls it that because he got a good response. He is tricking people into voting against their interests and the crowd is following him like he’s going to help them somehow. HE WON’T! He’s telling us all what he’s going to do.
He’s going to spend more on military, repeal Roe v Wade, decrease business regulation, allow anyone with money to buy into better alternatives, etc etc.

Barack Obama appeared on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart last night. Most of it was fun, like when Stewart showed Obama unflattering headlines about him like ‘Angry Obama The Pothead Is Not How They Remember Him In Hawaii.’ Obama said campaigning is a bit insane sometimes, like when you wake up and have to look at Mike Gravel first thing in the morning. Stewart ask Obama about his experience, or lack of it, and Obama responded, “No body has a longer resume than Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld, and that hasn’t worked out so well.” Obama said Hillary Clinton is “a very capable senator” and “very smart.” Stewart at one point mentioned that Obama should start small by maybe running a smaller country before trying the United States, and Obama responded, “What I did think about, though, was invading a smaller country.” That’s in the second video. He cited Grenada as an example after mispronouncing it’s name. Stewart asked Obama about his celebrity support, like Oprah Winfrey, who is hosting a major fund-raiser at her California home. Obama responded saying, “I think having Oprah’s support is wonderful….but the truth is in Iowa and New Hampshire, people just want to talk to you. They want to lift the hood, they want to kick the tires, they want to look in the eyes.”

Here is part two of Obama on The Daily Show;
If you think Ron Paul believes in the constitution, you’re crazy. He talks a good game, but he’s big corporation all the way. If you don’t want to have a union or you feel your insurance payments are a little too easy to make, he’s your man. He’s only a constitutionalist and libertarian as far as it concerns letting those with money make the rules. He believes in Social Darwinism and not the idea set forth by the founders of this nation that the Constitution is a living document that will be interpreted in accordance with the times and for benefit of the people. He believes all societal ills will be cured by the corporations for only if they act ethically will people buy their products; a misproven and ancient way of thinking. Therefore If you want to continue down this corporatist path we’re on, if you want to continue to lose workers rights, continue to lose jobs to other countries, continue to destroy our water, air and land, continue to run on fossil fuels, continue to sponsor big corporations with our tax dollars, and continue to give your taxes for policies that make you sick, your children dumb and fat, and make all of us poor, vote for him. He is a libertarian ONLY when it comes to financial issues. He believes Ayn Rands idea that only the fit survive. That means in this day and age, that whoever has the money rules those others. In other words, all those great corporations that have been getting amazing breaks over the last 7 years will only get more help fucking everyone else. As far as people, he couldn’t give a crap about them. We will all get the same opportunities he says. Well that’s easy to believe if you think everyone starts on equal ground.
In theory the idea that everyone has an equal chance is great. In reality it ignores inequity in society. The poor will get poorer, the middle class will continue to shrink, small business will basically be removed from the equation, and the rich will continue to get richer. The people with money will send their kids to private school while the public schools continue to fade. They will buy better health plans and live longer. They will continue to consolidate power.

A new pressure group, Freedom’s Watch have taken up the banner to support the war in Iraq. Freedom’s Watch plan a $15 million television, radio and grass-roots campaign starting today designed to shore up support for Bush’s policies in Iraq. They want to put pressure on Congress to support the war just before Army General David Petraeus, lays out a White House assessment of the war’s progress. This is the same progress report that the White House plans on writing for the General so he gets it right. The group already has a couple of pro-war videos on YouTube. One of the groups spokesman is former Bush White House spokesman Ari Fleischer. Fleischer said in an interview, “For people who believe in peace through strength, the cavalry is coming.” Fleischer wants, “to rally the country and encourage Congress to fully fund the troops in Iraq.” According to the web site the goal of the group, “as we await General Petraeus’ report, is to make sure our elected leaders do not abandon our nation’s mission in Iraq and that they do not cave in to the demands of those who want to cut and run.” So if you want to donate some more cash to war, besides all those tax dollars that has already been spent, then donate to this pro-war group. It would be interesting to see how many of the ring leaders of this group have actually been in the military. The only ones really benefiting from the war in Iraq are the war profiteers like Halliburton, and Brown and Root. Fortunately, there other groups working just as hard on behalf of peace. Americans Against Escalation In Iraq is planning a new organization initiative called Iraq Summer. They plan on deploying “110 organizers to the Districts of critical House and Senate Republicans who still support the President’s disastrous policy in Iraq. Their job will be to execute a national program to help fracture critical elements of the Republican base of support for the war by early fall.” So this fall General Petraeus will deliver his letter back to the White House, and advocacy groups will spend millions to convince Congress and us what we need to believe, and all of us will be just as confused and divided about this war as we were before the millions were spent.

There are only 10 more days left for voting in August for Presidential Idol, and Ron Paul’s lead is dwindling. Ron Paul has won this monthly poll every time since we started, but this month non-candidate Chuck Hagel is hot on his heals. Ron Paul currently has about 27% while Hagel has a little over 24%. At the end of the month we will kick the candidate with the least votes off of Presidential Idol. The candidates currently on the hot seat are Fred Thompson, John McCain, John Edwards, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Bill Richardson. If these are your candidates go to Presidential Idol and vote for them. Voting is free and you don’t need to register, just vote. On November 2008 we will come down to one candidate and they will be the first Presidential Idol. Thanks for voting, and have some fun.

Barack Obama wrote an Op-Ed piece for the Miami Herald Tuesday that said the Bush administration’s policy on Cuba is a failure. “The primary means we have of encouraging positive change in Cuba today is to help the Cuban people become less dependent on the Castro regime in fundamental ways,” Obama wrote. He says that the Bush administration has tried to promote democracy in Cuba the wrong way. In 2004 Bush pushed through tougher restrictions on Cubans wanting to travel back and forth from Cuba. Since the 1960’s there have been travel restrictions, but since 2004 Cuban-Americans can only go back once every three years, and can only send $300 back to their families every quarter. “Unfortunately, the Bush administration has made grand gestures to that end while strategically blundering when it comes to actually advancing the cause of freedom and democracy in Cuba.” Obama added that Bush’s decision to limit travel and money, “has not only had a profoundly negative impact on the welfare of the Cuban people. It has also made them more dependent on the Castro regime and isolated them from the transformative message carried there by Cuban Americans.” The Cuban embargo for the last 45 years has been a failure. We have pursued it to the appease the Cuban-Americans of Miami, but they have changed. The early Cuban immigrants were fleeing the political process with their whole families. All their wealth was stolen by Castro’s regime, and they hated him. Now they are fleeing in boats and leaving some family members back on the island. They desire more contact with their families in Cuba. According to Obama, “Cuban-American connections to family in Cuba are not only a basic right in humanitarian terms, but also our best tool for helping to foster the beginnings of grass-roots democracy on the island. Accordingly, I will grant Cuban Americans unrestricted rights to visit family and send remittances to the island.” This should have been done 40 years ago. Obama also wants to, “use aggressive and principled diplomacy to send an important message: If a post-Fidel government begins opening Cuba to democratic change, the United States (the president working with Congress) is prepared to take steps to normalize relations and ease the embargo that has governed relations between our countries for the last five decades.” Up to this point our policy regarding Cuba has been a failure. If we really wanted to get back at Cuba we should have opened up trade and travel years ago. If we had flooded Cuba with what the USA has to offer Castro would have been gone long ago. But instead, we gave him an enemy, and the strength to continue his dictatorship. Obama is trying to move in the right direction on Cuba. To read Obama’s whole article in the Miami Herald click here.

George W. Bush Is A Saint
Bush was scheduled to visit the Episcopal Church in NW Washington
as part of his campaign to restore his 28% approval rating in the polls.
Karl Rove made a visit to the Bishop and said, “We’ve been getting a
lot of bad publicity because of the President’s position on
stem cell research, the Iraq war, Hurricane Katrina, and the
VA Hospitals, But we’ll make a $500,000 contribution to your
church if during your sermon you will say the the President is a Saint.
The Bishop thought it over for a few moments and finally said,
The Church could really use the money – I’ll do it.”
The following Sunday, President Bush showed up for the sermon,
and the Bishop began:
“I’d like to speak to all of you this morning about our
President, George W. Bush. He is a liar,
a cheat, and a low-intelligence weasel.
He took the tragedy of September 11th and used it to frighten and
manipulate the American People.
He lied about weapons of mass destruction and invaded Iraq for
oil and money, causing the deaths of hundreds of
thousands. and making the United States the most hated nation on earth.
“He appointed cronies to positions of power and influence,
leading to widespread death and destruction during Hurricane
Katrina. He awarded contracts and tax cuts to his rich friends so
that we now have more poverty in this country and a greater gap
between rich and poor than we’ve had since the Depression.
“He has headed the most corrupt, bribe-inducing political party
since Teapot Dome Scandal.
“The national surplus has turned into a staggering national debt
of 77.6 trillion Dollars, gas prices are up 185%,
which the people of America cannot afford, and vital research
into global warming and stem cells is stopped cold because he’s
afraid to lose votes from the religious right.
“He is the worst example of a true Christian I’ve ever known.
But compared to Dick Cheney, George W. Bush is a saint.”
