John Edwards Calls War On Terror A Bumper Sticker Slogan

John Edwards is saying the global war on terror is nothing more than a “bumper sticker” slogan used by the Bush administration to justify all kinds of abuses from Guantanamo Bay to the invasion of Iraq. He says the war on terror is straining American military resources and is making the terrorist stronger. “We need a post-Bush, post-9/11, post-Iraq military that is mission focused on protecting Americans from 21st century threats, not misused for discredited ideological purposes,” Edwards said in remarks prepared for a speech before the Council on Foreign Relations. “By framing this as a war, we have walked right into the trap the terrorists have set; that we are engaged in some kind of clash of civilizations and a war on Islam.” Edwards has proposed ideas he thinks will get us out of Iraq and strengthen our military. Edwards had a few harsh words for the Bush administration too. He said the Bush years in office have left our troops exhausted, overworked, and potentially ill-prepared for future threats. “Leading the military out of the wreckage left by the poor civilian leadership of this administration will be the single most important duty of the next commander in chief,” Edwards said. In the debates Edwards was one of four that said they did not believe there was a global war on terror. Joe Biden, Dennis Kucinich, and Mike Gravel also agreed with Edwards. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton said they did think there was a global war on terror. It really doesn’t make sense to make war on words. This is like the “war on drugs”, and the “war on poverty.” The use of terror has been a military tactic since the beginning of time. General Sherman marched through Georgia conducting a war of terror, and we call him a great general. I am not justifying killing innocents, just stating facts. One person’s freedom fighter is another person’s terrorist. For us to believe we can stop the use of terror as a tactic is just ridiculous. Being the strongest meanest bully on the block does not make us right, and will not make us liked.

John Edwards Would Like Mandatory Service For Everyone

John Edwards has launched a new protest scheduled for Memorial day, this coming weekend. “There’s another thing we need to do as patriots, to serve the men and women who are serving this country in Iraq, and that is to speak out this weekend,” said Edwards. He has a new ad on his websight talking about protest. He is prodding Congress to continue bringing up legislation to end the war in Iraq. In a town hall meeting Edwards said, “The fact that we have a bullheaded, stubborn president who thinks he can do nothing wrong makes it more important, more imperative that we stand our ground against this president.” There are some who say that scheduling his protest during Memorial Day is in bad taste. Paul Morin, national commander of the American Legion, called the request “as inappropriate as a political bumper sticker on an Arlington headstone.” They feel this should be a day of reflection, and not a day for political bantering and protest. John Edwards has a plan he thinks will end the war in Iraq, and he said, “America has to be a force for good. … The world thinks we’re a bully and we’re selfish.” But he also realizes you can’t just pull out the troops and expect Iraq to be OK. Edwards said, “The president of the United States should prepare a strategic plan for containment of a civil war.” He also wants to bring back mandatory service for everyone, “One of the things we ought to be thinking about is some level of mandatory service to our country, so that everybody in America , not just the poor kids who get sent to war, are serving this country,” he said. He later backtracked and said it wasn’t just the poor serving our country now, but that, “What we want to do is to have all Americans to have a chance to serve their country.” We all need a chance to go to places like Iraq, then maybe we wouldn’t be so willing to get involved as quickly. It is interesting to hear a candidate call for mandatory service, when he himself didn’t have time to serve since he was to busy going to law school.

McCain Wants To Hold Cabinet Chiefs Accountable

With George Bush’s administration being chocked by scandals John McCain said he would Cabinet chiefs accountable. In a speech at the Oklahoma statehouse in Oklahoma City McCain said, “We were elected the majority in Congress thirteen years ago for that reason more than any other; to reform the way government is funded and structured, and to hold it accountable for its ability or inability to address the serious challenges of our time.” McCain said his administration would review ethical standards frequently. He would even withhold money from government programs that don’t meet standards. “If they’re not giving Americans good value for their tax dollars, they’re going to have to change or they’re going out of business,” McCain says. Every agency’s inspector general will get direct access to department heads and Cabinet secretaries. “I’ll hold those senior officeholders directly responsible for taking the necessary corrective measures to ensure the integrity of the departments they lead,” McCain says. With all the news about Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz this kind of tough talk will be well received. Someone needs to watch all these crooks and liars working in our government.

Brownback And Huckabee Get Cheers For Being Anti-Gay

Sam Brownback and Mike Huckabee joined forces to talk at the Florida Family Policy Council dinner in Orlando. Both candidates stuck to topics important to the group. They didn’t talk about the Iraq war, health care, taxes, or even education. Instead they stuck to a pro-faith, anti-abortion, and anti-gay message. The crowd, looking for alternatives to the top three Republican candidates, cheered their message. Sen. Mel Martinez of Florida, who also serves as the Republican National Committee general chairman, was there and had this to say, “I am completely blown away by the two men we heard tonight.” Both of the candidates urged the crowd to get behind efforts to put in the state constitution an amendment to make gay marriage illegal in Florida. The Florida Family Policy Council is already leading a petition drive to place a proposed amendment on the 2008 ballot. So Brownback and Huckabee were just preaching to the choir. Or maybe they just want to ride on the coat tails of this amendment. Brownback told the crowd, “You need to redefine the definition of marriage as a union of a man and a woman. It’s critical.”….. “I’m going to be the president that’s the family president that helps rebuild this fundamental institution.” Huckabee told the crowd about how he made it harder to get a divorce in his state. “I realized that the laws in my state were such that it would be easier to get out of a marriage than it was to get out of a contract for having purchased a used car,” Huckabee said. “We realized we need to make some changes.” If these two candidates want to have a chance in the race for 08 they need to convince groups like these that they are the true conservative of the group of ten.

Ron Paul States The Facts On CNN

Ron Paul was on CNN’s Late Edition and was asked again if he believed the U.S. “invited the 9/11 attacks.” This has been going on since Ron Paul’s answer in the debate last week where he explained blowback to the audience. Ron Paul answered the CNN interview by saying it was not a belief, but just an evaluation of facts. What Ron Paul said at the debate was true, yet Rudy Giuliani, and many of the major news organizations think Giuliani made some kind of knock out punch. Some even compared it to the Reagan moment when he grabbed the mike and stated “I paid for this microphone.” Guiliani said during the debate, “That’s really an extraordinary statement. That’s an extraordinary statement, as someone who lived through the attack of September 11 that we invited the attack because we were attacking Iraq. I don’t think I’ve heard that before, and I’ve heard some pretty absurd explanations for September 11th.” So Giuliani has never heard of this idea? And the Fox debate moderators didn’t think to challenge Giuliani’s absurd claim? It is well documented that Osama bin Laden and his group of henchman said that the 9/11 attacks where prompted by U.S. policies in Iraq, and the Middle East. In his declaration of war in the 1990s bin Laden said it was U.S. troops on the sacred soil of Saudi Arabia, U.S. bombing and sanctions of a crushed Iraqi people, and U.S. support of Israel’s persecution of the Palestinians that were the reasons he and his mujahideen were declaring war on the U.S. It clearly states this in the 9/11 Commission Report. If we really want to fight a war on terror we should spend some time trying to understand the enemy. Maybe ask the question, “Why did they attack us?” We should also understand about how projecting military power around the world in our customary manner creates blowback. Giuliani’s answer was based solely on emotions, and totally lacking in facts. Does Giuliani follow the Bush line, and say they attacked us because they are evil and we are good? Or maybe the other Bush line, because they hate freedom. The country needs someone with the frankness of Ron Paul, but it seems, if the polls are corret, the country would prefer to have someone that is clueless like Giuliani. They are now even talking about not allowing Ron Paul in any future debates. I guess the Republicans don’t want him back telling the country how the party blundered us into this quagmire in Iraq.

McCain Has Missed 43 Straight Votes, Yet Knows More Than The Rest Of Room

John McCain has missed over 40 consecutive roll call votes, going five weeks straight without even stopping by. He finally stopped by to give praise to the new immigration legislation being proposed, and got into a shouting match with Sen. John Cornyn. Cornyn was concerned about the number of judicial appeals that illegal immigrants could receive. McCain said he thought Cornyn was just being petty. According to the Washington Post McCain, “used a curse word associated with chickens and accused Cornyn of raising the issue just to torpedo a deal.” I think that means the McCain called Cornyn a cock or chicken shit. “Wait a second here,” Cornyn said to McCain. “I’ve been sitting in here for all of these negotiations and you just parachute in here on the last day. You’re out of line.” Not to be outdone, McCain responds with, “Fuck You! I know more about this than anyone else in the room.” Later on the McCain camp denied that McCain said he knew more about the subject than any of the other Senators. They didn’t mention McCain’s potty mouth, but did admit the two Senators had quite a disagreement. A deal was worked out, and Cornyn didn’t join in the final agreement. Later on McCain joined nine other Senators to announce the deal. After the announcement McCain jumped right back on the campaign trail. Later that day he also missed his 43rd straight vote, this one on the $2.9 trillion budget outline.
On the campaign trial McCain has given praise to this immigration bill. He told a crowd, “Business as usual is no longer acceptable. Our borders are broken, our first priority before anything else happens is to secure our border.” He insists that it is not an amnesty program, “Well, because amnesty means forgiveness. This is a very difficult process that anyone would have to go through if they want to become a citizen or even remain in the United States of America,” McCain said. How can this chicken shit go around the country asking us to give him the most important job in the country when he can’t even do the last job we gave him? And do we really want him at the negotiation table telling world leaders to go fuck themselves?

Al Gore Assaults Our Reason With ‘I Haven’t Ruled It Out’

Former vice-president Al Gore will be on the front cover of Time magazine this week, and raises speculation about a possible run in 08 for Gore. You can’t do an interview with Gore without asking if he will run for President again. In most poll’s he is third or fourth just behind Clinton and Obama, and usually close to Edwards. In the Time interview Gore tells them he has “fallen out of love with politics.” “I haven’t ruled it out. But I don’t think it’s likely to happen,” Gore told Time. Time went on to ask what would it take, specifically? “I can’t say because I’m not looking for it. But I guess I would know it if I saw it. I haven’t ruled it out. But I don’t think it’s likely to happen.” Well at least he still talks like a politician. Time also has excerpts from Gore’s new book, ‘The Assault on Reason.’ In his book Gore examines American democracy and how it has gone awry. In his book he writes;

It is too easy and too partisan to simply place the blame on the policies of President George W. Bush. We are all responsible for the decisions our country makes. We have a Congress. We have an independent judiciary. We have checks and balances. We are a nation of laws. We have free speech. We have a free press. Why have they all failed us? … American democracy is now in danger not from any one set of ideas, but from unprecedented changes in the environment within which ideas either live and spread, or wither and die.

Gore keeps popping up in the news; first the Oscar, then he was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize, and now his book. He has the money, the world wide connections, and the political savvy to still jump into this race and compete if he so decides. Being a politician is much like being an alcoholic. Gore was emotionally damaged from his loss to Bush in 2000. He doesn’t talk about it publicly, or even privately. All he needs is a good taste, and he will be back into politics, and once again fall back in love with his old friend, politics. To read the whole Time interview click here.
