Bush, Hey Democrats What’s Your Plan? Because I’m The Decision Maker Here.

President Bush, The Decider, is now also The Decision Maker. Bush declared at a meeting with senior military leaders that, “I know there is skepticism and pessimism and that some are condemning a plan before it’s even had a chance to work,” the president said. “They have an obligation and a serious responsibility therefore to put up their own plan as to what would work.” Even though some members of Congress have come up with alternative plans, like get out, Bush has ignored all of their advice. Instead he has plowed on with this same ole losing stategy. He consults with Congress, but doesn’t listen to what they have to say, and then claims they have nothing new to offer.. And once again if they can’t agree with the President then they seem to “embolden the enemy” as the new US Defence Secretary Robert Gates has suggested Congressional resolutions opposing Mr Bush’s troops plan “emboldens the enemy”. President Bush also said that he had authorized US forces in Iraq to target Iranian agents there. “If somebody’s trying to harm our troops, or stop us from achieving our goal, or killing innocent citizens in Iraq, we will stop them,” Bush said. They call it the “capture or kill policy”, which is specifically aimed at Iranians in Iraq. This seems to many to just be another step to try to move the war past the borders into Iran. By adopting this more confrontational stance with Iran, Bush is rejecting another idea from the Iraq Study Group that encourages diplomacy with Iran to help quell secretarian violence in Iraq. Why talk with Iran, they are just another part of “the evil empire”? It would be better to just kill them. This public warning to Iran was accompanied by the deployment of an additional aircraft carrier off Iran’s coast and advanced Patriot antimissile defense systems in Persian Gulf countries near Iran’s borders. Both the White House and the secretary of defense, Robert M. Gates, insisted Friday that the United States was not seeking to goad Iran into conflict, and that it had no intention of taking the battle into Iranian territory. The White House spokesman, Tony Snow, tried to steer reporters away from “an urban legend that’s going around” that Mr. Bush was “trying to prepare the way for war” with Iran or Syria. A report in the LA Times earlier this week, found that there was scant evidence of Iran-Iraq arms link, which is the basis for this latest buildup against the Iranians. We are adding 20,000 troops into the battle, and instigating more retaliatory attacks from Iranians. Seems like an escalation to me. Is that how you “win” in Iraq? The polls all suggest that “The Decider” has not been making wise decisions. And “The Decision Maker” doesn’t seem to listen to anyone anyway. It’s Bush’s way, or the highway. Well now I think we are all on Bush’s highway to hell, and driving in the fast lane. It is time to stop, and get another driver.

Duncan Hunter is In, And Wants to Bring Peace Through Strength

U.S. Representative Duncan Hunter (official campaign site) of California announced today he is in the race. He was elected into Congress in 1980, the same year that Reagan became the President. He has stood by those same Reagan conservative principles, and calls himself the most conservative candidate running. Hunter believes strongly in the principle of Peace through Strength. Being from California he is also a big fan of Border Enforcement, ” I believe in providing Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement corps with sufficient strength to secure our borders and providing for interior enforcement throughout the country because it is imperative in our fight to protect Americans. To not do so can only be characterized as irresponsible.” He would lke to build fences all along the border to protect us from Mexicans, and illegal aliens. Hunter was a Army Ranger in Vietnam, and his son has spent a couple of 7 month tours in Iraq.

MoveOn.org Gives McCain Credit for Coming Up With Bush’s Troop Surge Plan

Here is a recent Moveon.org video they are playing in some TV markets. Senator McCain in a speech before the American Enterprise Institute early in January said that “There are two keys to any surge of U.S. troops: to be of value, it must substantial and it must be sustained.” He has been a champion of troop increases for some time. Here is a link

A Huge Sigh of Relief From the Democratic Side, Kerry’s Out

John Kerry announced today that he is out of the Presidential race for 2008, instead he plans to use his seat in the Senate to help end the war in Iraq.  He had been acting like a candidate every since he lost two years ago.  In 2004 he was attacked for flip floping on the issues, and he made it easy for Republicans sometimes.  He also failed to answer to the Swiftboat attacks in time, and suffered because of it.  He almost won, and many thought he did until the very end.  In late 2006, just as he was getting started again, he made a huge political mistake with a speech to a bunch of college students.  He really didn’t mean it the way it sounded, but as always he is such an easy target. De De Deee….  It really is unreasonable to think he really thinks soilders aren’t that smart since he was a soilder himself at one time.  But then again Kerry isn’t that smart…  With the latest entries of Hillary, Obama, and Richardson, and his own Vice Presidential candidate in 04 Edwards, all doing much better in any polls, it was probably an easy decision to drop out.   Also in the news; the Democratic controlled Senate Foreign Relations Committe rejected President Bush’s proposal for more troops one day after President Bush had asked for Congress to “give it a chance to work”.   The resolution was proposed  Democrats Joseph Biden and Carl Levin, and Republican Chuck Hagel, a long-standing critic of the war.  They passed the resolution saying the troop increase was “not in the national interest”,   There is a growing list of Republicans willing to sign on to this including candidate Sam Brownback.  This is all really just a bit of political theater though because Bush is going to send the new “surge” of troops anyway.  In an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, vice President Dick Cheney stated, the administration is committed to moving ahead with its plan to send more troops to Baghdad, even if Congress passes a resolution in opposition.

“It won’t stop us,” he said. “And it would be, I think, detrimental from the standpoint of the troops.”

If U.S. forces were to pull out of Iraq, “we would simply validate the terrorists’ strategy that says the Americans will not stay to complete the task … that we don’t have the stomach for the fight. That’s the biggest threat.”

He added, “The notion that somehow the effort hasn’t been worth it, or that we shouldn’t go ahead and complete the task, is just dead wrong.”

Cheney said the U.S.-led ouster of Saddam Hussein was the right move.

Bush New Strategy Just More of the Same Ole Same Ole

President Bush’s State of The Union Speech was first half domestic issues, and second half his war in Iraq.   The two big domestic issues were health care and his energy initiatives.  On Health care Bush said, “Tonight, I propose two new initiatives to help more Americans afford their own insurance. First, I propose a standard tax deduction for health insurance that will be like the standard tax deduction for dependents. Families with health insurance will pay no income or payroll taxes on $15,000 of their income. Single Americans with health insurance will pay no income or payroll taxes on $7,500 of their income. With this reform, more than 100 million men, women, and children who are now covered by employer-provided insurance will benefit from lower tax bills.

At the same time, this reform will level the playing field for those who do not get health insurance through their job. For Americans who now purchase health insurance on their own, my proposal would mean a substantial tax savings — $4,500 for a family of four making $60,000 a year. And for the millions of other Americans who have no health insurance at all, this deduction would help put a basic private health insurance plan within their reach. Changing the tax code is a vital and necessary step to making health care affordable for more Americans.”   I can’t  see how the poor and uninsured that pay very little taxes anyway will benefit from this.  The savings in taxes will not be anywhere close enough for them to purchase even “a basic health insurance plan.”

On his energy intiatives, what I found interesting is that Bush admitted there is global warming, “ America is on the verge of technological breakthroughs that will enable us to live our lives less dependent on oil. These technologies will help us become better stewards of the environment — and they will help us to confront the serious challenge of global climate change.’  He still wants us less dependent on foreign oil, decrease gas usage through alternative fuels.  The technology is already there, but the oil interest in this country is dragging us through this till the bitter end.  We have had issues with being held hostage by foreign oil interests since at least the 1970’s, and yet we have progressed very little.  We all know what Brazil is doing, mostly with Ford made cars, and ethanol, a program they first started working on during the 1970’s, how ironic.  Maybe if we didn’t let the Oil Industries write our Energy Bills???

The second half of Bush’s speech was about the Iraq War.  He claims he has a new stratagy in Iraq, “a plan that demands more from Iraq’s elected government, and gives our forces in Iraq the reinforcements they need to complete their mission. Our goal is a democratic Iraq that upholds the rule of law, respects the rights of its people, provides them security, and is an ally in the war on terror.”  Sounds like more of the same stuff to me.  We were supposed to train them to protect themselves from themselves.  Bush is ignoring the will of the country, and as Senator Jim Webb said in the Democratic response, “The president took us into this war recklessly. He disregarded warnings from the national security adviser during the first Gulf War, the chief of staff of the Army, two former commanding generals of the Central Command,”   Senator Webb is a Vietnam vetern, and his son serves in Iraq, so he doesn’t take the subject of war lightly or without foreknowledge.  I don’t think President Bush did anything to convince Congress to go along with his “new stategy”.  And if he wants support Bush needs to really find a new new stategy and quit dragging out the same ole dawg and pony show with a different name.  The plan in Iraq now is a mess.  Forcing “Democracy” through the barrel of guns is not working, so maybe it is time to include some Diplomacy with those gun barrels.  This Bush administration has acted like a spoiled little child when it comes to talking with “enemies” or foes.  Bush also pleaded “America must not fail in Iraq.”
Defeat in Iraq, he said, would be “grievous and far-reaching” because the fighting in Iraq is part of a broader struggle against Islamic extremists across the Middle East and stretching to the farther reaches of the globe. But truthfully, we have already failed in Iraq, and now what is left is to clean up this mess with the best face we can put forward.  Bush or his supporttors can’t admit this grievious mistake, and will not admit failure.  They instead insist on contiuing this war with “surges” in troops and “new strategies”.  Maybe Bush can even drag us right into the next election with this war, and therefore; not be the President responsible for losing another war in a foreign country.   It is all about Bush’s leagacy now.   We don’t even really know why we started this fight, and now we don’t know how to get out.  Thank you President Bush.
Last nights speech was just more of the same ole stuff.

Transcripts from The Presidents State of the Union Speech and The Democratic Response

Here is the text of President Bush’s State of the Union Speech part one, and part two.. And here is the text of the Democrats response, delivered by Senator Jim Webb of Virginia.

State of The Union

Tonights State of the Union will be mostly about domestic issues. Bush made his big Iraq speech about adding 20,000 more troops a couple of weeks ago, and it didn’t seem to go over that good. With Bush’s polls and popularity so low, and facing a Democratic Congress tonite it would be best for him to stay with the domestic issues. My guess is that the State of Union will be “Strong”, just like it has been the last 5 times. Another interesting fact is that the last two Presidents to have a 7th State of the Union Speech was Bill Clinton right after the impeachment stuff, and Ronnie Reagan right after the Iran Contra affair. So at least in recent history, the 7th State of Union Adress is all about cleaning up some mess left over from previous years. Bush will talk about Health Care, Immigration, alternative fuels, and there is even talk about him bringing up the No Child Left Behind. That was a failed policy that Bush never funded anyway. Bush will try to reach across party lines, and gain their confindence, but I doubt there is any chance left for that. This is a perfect example of a Lame Duck President in action. The only real action to watch tonite is American Idol, and then the clapping, or lack of on the State of Union Speech. This is probably Bush’s lowest point of his Presidency, and now he has convince us that the State of The Union is “strong”. Tough sell…..
